Experience

Jan was the founding Professor and Director of the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) at the University of NSW. She has a strong national and international reputation as a leading researcher in the development of brief interventions for cannabis related problems. She has also developed major programs of research in the development of treatment outcome monitoring systems; development of treatment models for substance dependent women; and aspects of psychostimulants. Since the de-funding of NCPIC she is now the Director of Cannabis Information and Support in a voluntary capacity.

Her research and research translation work has included 14 clinical trials. She has more than 335 publications including lead author of Quitting Cannabis (Allen & Unwin) and sole author of SBIRT clinical training manual Marijuana Brief Intervention (Hazelden Publishing).  Her research and translation work has attracted more than $44M in funding support.>

Memberships

Jan has worked with a number of community based agencies on service evaluations and executive management. She currently serves on The Board of Management of NSW Odyssey House and is Co-chair of the Quality and Clinical Safety Committee. She is also a member of the Board of the Progressive Learning Centre School at the service.

She is currently supervising doctoral students at UNSW as an Honorary Professor. She is a member of the Australian Psychological Association, Australian Professional Society on Alcohol and Drugs, The International Cannabinoid Research Society and the US College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD). She has previously served as the Chair of their International Research Committee and is currently a member of their Credential and also Membership committees. Jan is on the Editorial Board of a number of international journals and is an Associate Editor of the US based journals Drug and Alcohol Dependence and Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.
